Our purpose

Why Rolling Sunset exists

Good horses are the product of patient decisions made over many years. Rolling Sunset was established to make those decisions with care: to choose foundation stock thoughtfully, to raise horses well, and to let each generation inform the next.

We are in our founding stage. Our program objectives are being defined, and we are preparing to evaluate and acquire the horses that will form our foundation. Everything described on this site reflects our plans and intended approach as that work begins.

Our vision

Two programs, one standard of care

We are developing two distinct programs. The Thoroughbred and the American Quarter Horse have different histories, physical types and purposes, and we believe each deserves objectives and selection criteria of its own.

What the programs will share is a way of working: clear goals, honest evaluation, attentive stewardship and a long view. Over time, our aim is for Rolling Sunset to be known for horses that are sound, sensible and thoughtfully bred.

Guiding principles

The commitments behind our decisions

These principles describe how we intend to run Rolling Sunset. They will guide how we select, care for and breed every horse in our programs.

Welfare
Each horse’s health, comfort and quality of life will come before any breeding goal. We intend to keep our program at a size that allows attentive, individual care.
Soundness
Durable, correct horses are the basis of a lasting program. Soundness will weigh heavily in every selection and every breeding decision we make.
Temperament
A sensible, willing disposition matters to everyone who will handle, train and live alongside a horse. We will treat temperament as a primary consideration, not an afterthought.
Pedigree evaluation
We will study pedigrees for how well they suit each program’s objectives, and for what they suggest about soundness and character, not for names alone.
Responsible planning
Every breeding should have a purpose. We intend to plan matings deliberately, with a realistic view of the future of each foal and the resources needed to raise it well.

For future generations

A foundation is only as strong as its first choices

The horses we select first will shape our programs for years to come. That is why we are taking the time to define what we are looking for before we acquire a single horse.
